It not only makes the space more enjoyable for your growing child, it also serves more than one purpose such as a play area if the room is well planned. When thinking of renovating a child’s room, always put safety first, eye level cabinets that do not have nooks and crannies that can get little hands caught. Also avoid furnishings with ledges where your child can get a foothold and climb up making it a danger for falls and other accidents. Play with colors to encourage creativity and if your child is in the stage where writing becomes compulsory, consider having or putting up a doodle wall which has surfaces that are specially treated for easy clean-up ready for the next days doodles. One can also settle for cheaper sheets of paper (brown ones also work) which may come in many colors from arts and crafts stores, mounting a few clamps to hang them from and viola, you have an instant doodle area for your child.

The old colors that complement each other in bold ways are paired with softer hues. The move into making a house more appealing to your guests as well as yourself is more and more on the trends list yet many fail to realize the effect color has on your moods. If one wishes soothing surroundings after a hard day’s work, have your rest or entertainment area in soft hues. Stay away from bold colors which are harsh on the eyes and stimulate activeness. Baby blue and baby pink are considered to be the most soothing and have even been used in correctional facilities to sooth down rowdy inmates. They work and you’ll appreciate the effect they have on your overall mood.

Efforts to reduce the pressure on the ever lessening old growth forests are underway and reclaiming lumber for other purposes such as furniture are being hailed as better solutions to cutting them down. The wood was so old they used a saw to cut paper thin wafers that was stuck onto particle wood to make furniture (the wood is too valuable to use as is). So you better get on the lookout for some hot deals on antiques and wood furnishings, they are surely getting harder and harder to get hold of.

Many love wood and its natural appearance going through extreme lengths to show them off. May it be flooring, wood paneling for the walls or the furniture, wood seems to transcend time and as we all know it, the older the wood the more character it holds. Old growth wood is now harder to get due to bans on cutting down trees from forests for furniture and many other uses. Timber that comes out of commercial forests is just not good enough for the wood lover. Antiques have been fetching good prices and all are due to the endearing properties of older wood from older forests we just cannot get enough of.

Double glazed windows keep electricity costs down in terms of cooling and heating. Adding blinds or curtains to give privacy is also a great idea allowing you to vary the amount of light going into the room. Applications in the form of well-loved cartoon characters come in all shapes and sizes for application to glass that is as easy as pie. If the windows in your house are quite large and accessible to the child, install child proof locks and grilles to prevent falls. Another great idea is to get one of those wireless cameras for easy monitoring for audio and video while you work in and around the house helping you keep track of your energetic toddler. Locating devices attached to a child’s belt also allows freedom which sounds an alarm if he/she strays too far from you.

The best interiors are those that not only look good but maximize the use of the space in both function and form. Many people do this by using old stuff they get from yard sales and flea markets and having them transformed into something totally new. Say, the shutters of an antique house that was torn down, they can be used to form the table top for a dining table with a new coat of finish and a pane of tempered glass on top makes a unique one of a kind furnishing. I’ve even seen the chassis of an old car get incorporated into a bed with all the other stuff removed with only the shell remaining placed over a wooden frame. So with interior design, experts are experts but who would be better of an expert in re-making your room or dining area than you. All you need is a little time, imagination and elbow grease. Never underestimate what you know and feel for you are unique and special like all of us are.

Many think that interior design is based on a fixed rule of thumb that all interior designers follow but that is a very much wrong assumption. Interior design is about taking a space and making it both beautiful and functional at the same time. It also incorporates the personality of the homeowner as can be seen in some rather outrageous vacation homes that can be seen on a certain TV program. They do look unique and lavish but the incorporation of the personal touch is very evident in the designs the interior designers come up with for their clients. That is why interior design is a medley of the science of the use of space and art of making it both functional while giving it a look of grandeur. A good interior designer has the ability to mend these two forms of expression into a functional seamless space.

Bright colors in solid combinations makes for a lively and enjoyable space and being summer, it would be a nice thing to do to your home as people tend to stay out more to escape the warm sun. When the boys and dad head off to the beach, you can finally get down to business of checking out the latest trends in design and color schemes that with simple moves and changes to say sofa covers and other such items can indeed have a very big impact on your home. The next few posts would give us some of the hottest trends this summer as we welcome the sun as it heats up, way up.

Indoor, outdoor, plastic wood metal you name it, it can paint it. Take a trip to your local home depot and you’ll get to see the huge selection of paints that come in all spaes and sizes for just about all types of applications. The catch, it tends to be quite cumbersome for somenody to get the right type of paint at the right time for the wide selection takes your head in a spin that kinda takes some of the fun away from DIY. Get the wrong paint type and you end up with a mess and sometimes even unusable stuff just because you wanted to get the cheapest stuff. With a wide range of colors and variations to choose from, the selection and finishing of that old furniture of yours just got a bit easier and better.

What ever the hell gave us that idea? Well, as it turns out, these duct-work that carries heated/cooled air through he house is one source of wasted energy for they leak and they leak bad. Escaping air cools or warms the crawlspace instead of the interior of the house. Go to any attic in winter and you’ll see. Even the most professional job of installing them results in a leak or two in the duct work that wastes energy in terms of the power we spend for cooling and heating. The new approach has people exposing these duct-work which truly are ugly but finding better ways of concealing them as if they were intended to look that way. Faux finishes, moldings and cornices can work added to some creative painting and you too can save on your electricity and gas bills.
