If one fancies the old worn look of yesteryears then what is stopping you. The best interiors are those that not only look good but maximize the use of the space in both function and form. Many people do this by using old stuff they get from yard sales and flea markets and having them transformed into something totally new. Say, the shutters of an antique house that was torn down, they can be used to form the table top for a dining table with a new coat of finish and a pane of tempered glass on top makes a unique one of a kind furnishing. I’ve even seen the chassis of an old car get incorporated into a bed with all the other stuff removed with only the shell remaining placed over a wooden frame. So with interior design, experts are experts but who would be better of an expert in re-making your room or dining area than you. All you need is a little time, imagination and elbow grease. Never underestimate what you know and feel for you are unique and special like all of us are.

Many think that interior design is based on a fixed rule of thumb that all interior designers follow but that is a very much wrong assumption. Interior design is about taking a space and making it both beautiful and functional at the same time. It also incorporates the personality of the homeowner as can be seen in some rather outrageous vacation homes that can be seen on a certain TV program. They do look unique and lavish but the incorporation of the personal touch is very evident in the designs the interior designers come up with for their clients. That is why interior design is a medley of the science of the use of space and art of making it both functional while giving it a look of grandeur. A good interior designer has the ability to mend these two forms of expression into a functional seamless space.

Bright colors in solid combinations makes for a lively and enjoyable space and being summer, it would be a nice thing to do to your home as people tend to stay out more to escape the warm sun. When the boys and dad head off to the beach, you can finally get down to business of checking out the latest trends in design and color schemes that with simple moves and changes to say sofa covers and other such items can indeed have a very big impact on your home. Good news for those weekend DIY warriors, Rust-oleum has come up with the next generation of spray paint that aims to take away most of the guesswork in paint selection for all uses. Indoor, outdoor, plastic wood metal you name it, it can paint it. Take a trip to your local home depot and you’ll get to see the huge selection of paints that come in all spaes and sizes for just about all types of applications. The catch, it tends to be quite cumbersome for somenody to get the right type of paint at the right time for the wide selection takes your head in a spin that kinda takes some of the fun away from DIY. There is a new trend where duct-work that used to be hidden away in the crawlspace in between the roof and the ceiling is exposed to save on energy. What ever the hell gave us that idea? Well, as it turns out, these duct-work that carries heated/cooled air through he house is one source of wasted energy for they leak and they leak bad. Escaping air cools or warms the crawlspace instead of the interior of the house. Go to any attic in winter and you’ll see. Even the most professional job of installing them results in a leak or two in the duct work that wastes energy in terms of the power we spend for cooling and heating. The new approach has people exposing these duct-work which truly are ugly but finding better ways of concealing them as if they were intended to look that way. Faux finishes, moldings and cornices can work added to some creative painting and you too can save on your electricity and gas bills.

Accessorizing the Home

There are now many stuff that one can use to accessorize a home to suit any look you may want to achieve. From simple upgrade supplies (converts ordinary table lamps and fixtures to attain a different look while not having to change them per se’) and crafts you can go to the nearest craft’s stores which you might be surprised to find has tons of home decorating stuff you could use to give your home a new look. Don’t want a house with solid color walls, divide the walls into two sections and get your hands on some stencils (along with the paint) Use the stencil to break up the border of the upper wall, separating it from the lower part which you can then paint a different color.

For do-it-yourself buffs, this works best for it allows you to play around with the designs allowing you to incorporate ones you see off magazines and displays. Existing furnishings can be placed in a virtual place (virtual design tools are available which allow the input of a room’s dimensions along with the existing furnishings that allow you to move them around with the click of a mouse). If one is not adept to using computers, a simple pen, paper and scissors set-up will get you the same effect. Use a tape measure to get the dimensions of the room and all the furnishings you have to allow you to move them around without using your muscles.

Smart storage units that can be adapted to any changes you may have to storage needs are the best to work with for they can be enlarged or further divided into smaller spaces as necessary.
Have large drawers, get some slide hardware and split it into two to get double the space with the same area. Have more space than you need, don’t cram everything in there for they tend to get messy. Get cabinet or drawer organizers to get them in order fast. They come in plastic dividers and wood made form moth resistant varieties that are also adaptable.

Need more storage space and you’re house in jam-packed, what about the attic? There are a majority of homes with wasted attic spaces that have ample room for another room that may be renovated cheaply to get more room. If you do not need additional room but more storage space, install attic ladders that fold-up and stow away to keep the ceiling clean and crisp.
Make sure the ceiling members can handle your weight and the weight of the stuff you are to store, adding reinforcement should it be needed.
