When repairing some woodworks, power tools are sometimes a must. However, if you use them, see to it that the room has proper airation especially if you are working in a garage where flammable gas or vapours may collect. Dispose of rags used for paint thinner or gasoline. Place your work area away from children, pets, vehicles and gas powered lawnmowers. If you only do woodworking projects from time to time, it might be cheaper to rent equipment rather than buy it. Some stores that rent out equipment have a wide selection of tools you can choose from which are generally well maintained. In case you need information on how to use a particular tool, the store clerk or assistant can give you a short demonstration plus safety hints.

The Unlivable Space

If you have more things than you need, chances are your room becomes overcrowded – in short, an unlivable space. You need to unload some of your things. To do this, first, choose the things you don’t need and then make a conscious decision to give them away to charity or somewhere – for as long as you give them away. Your junk could still be useful to others. Whatever is left, well you need to find storage for them.

  • Look north, south, east and west, any space you see is your prospective storage space. It could be next to your bed, furniture or closet.
  • In your room, the space beyond probably 5 feet is a great place to install shelves where you can put those knick knacks, things that have little use but are decorative.
  • Enclose shelves behind doors.
  • Use a knee hole table with drawers you can use for storage instead of the spindly type.
  • Skirt your table. Use a floor length table cloth to cover your table and voila! you can store anything underneath it from stack books to craft supplies.
  • When buying furniture, choose those with storage space in them like a chest of drawers doesn’t necessarily mean a big one. A smaller one with enough storage space will do. A coffee table can hide things that a glass topped one cannot. A wooden sofa with cupboards beneath could store a million things. The same goes for a high bed with drawers and study area beneath.

Then everything is in its place and there’s a place for everything.

The Look of French Country

29 September, 2008 (08:05) | Basics, Do-It-Yourself, Information | By: Allan

Decorating your home French Country style doesn’t have to be expensive. The style is casual and welcoming, using a lot of natural materials such as rustic wood, stone floors and wrought iron. Dark woods that are low-gloss and natural looking, are often used for, and can easily be found in thrift shops. Choose fabrics that follow the vivid colors of the countryside, such as red, blue, green, yellow and gold. Toile, a fabric with a white, cream or yellow background adorned with pictures in a single contrasting color, such as red, blue, black or green, is the fabric most often used in French Country. Accessories that feature animals or nature scenes are most often used in French Country. Roosters, in particular, are associated with French country and is a major motif. Fresh flowers like lavender or geraniums, set in baskets, an old pitcher or clear glass vases also bring the touch of French Country inside the home.

Have you ever wondered how you can make your home look like the place of the affluent people? Or would you just like to create an impression of classic beauty with an air of sophistication?

All of these things can be made through the use of interior designs.

Basically, interior design refers to the art of manipulating and forming the inner space of a house, an office, or a room, through the management of surface healing and spatial volume. The interior designer should know and take into consideration the different parts of design styles. Included in the aspect of styles are the seven elements of design that an interior designer must always take into account. These are the shape, form, line, texture, color, pattern, and mass. All of these things, when incorporated in a project will bring out the best results. However, good interior designers must also take into account the aspects of beauty in terms of its function and aesthetics. A good balance between the two will instigate proper coordination of all the elements of design. The reason behind this argument is based on the fact that the concept of beauty is always comparative and qualified. As the old adage goes, Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Interior Design : The Minimalist Look

interior5.jpgInterior design is a good thing to do when deciding on what to do with your own space. All you need is a little imagination, time and some elbow grease, but things do tend to get out of hand in some cases. Small rooms crammed with too much stuff tend to look smaller than they are so the best way to approach it is to make a plan. As with any project, a plan is essential in gauging the progress in attaining a desired result. Oh, and the plan, you can revise it and you can add to it but make sure you stick to it for that is what you had initially set out to do and the initial design incorporated that. People succumb to the craving of this might look better or this is much better ending up with project that is over budget, taking too long and wasting materials and supplies in the making, re-making, and again re-making of a certain aspect that goes around in circles. So stick to the plan !! Add and revise but always check the initial plan(and you allotted budget at the same time).

Interior design is the art and science of maximizing the use of a space both aesthetically and functionally. There are many branches of the said field with the so-called interior designing itself as the main focus of this site. Do you know that there are many products and services that are now available on the market today that used to be limited to people in the field a few years back. To see this, visit the local home depot or browse through their online stores to see the variety of tools, equipment and furnishings that can be purchased to make use of a space more effectively. With that knowledge in mind one can do about a re-design of a space at a fraction of the cost it used to take. Top save time, make use of readily available supplies and do more research of local suppliers for special items.

Green Furniture

greenfurniture.jpgAs more and more of us becomes aware of our place on this earth and the need for conservation however small it might seem is indeed impacting the way we decorate and fix our houses. Previousd trends places high prices on furniture made form old-growth trees which are now fast becoming extinct due to demand. Furniture makers still use expensive and exclusive wood that comes form forests (diseased or storm damaged ones) but they are turning to a majority of products that are made from sustainable timber resources. This places less pressure on our diminishing forests, many of which have already disappeared. Cultivated timber can provide a solution afterall, former old-growth forests cannot regaint heir natural beauty on their own for tit takes milions of years and a couple of hundred or so to make nice and good trees into old-growth forest. Being responsible is the key and the only way to maintain the status of wood as a material of choice when it comes to furniture is to manage and seek alternative sources to help mother earth recover from the neglect and pollution we have taxed on her in our short history.

Hiding wires and cables

13 May, 2008 (07:34) | Do-It-Yourself | By: Avatar

cabletracks.JPGOne of the most unsightly parts of a home are all those wires and cables that makes modern living possible. Without the inclusion of provisions such as ample power outlets and hidden raceways, they accumulate into snaking copper eye-sores that most of us would want to do without. There are now methods of hiding such wires with base boards and cornices that look like the real thing yet have built-in raceways where you could route your snaking cables inside of. They hide as well as give additional looks to a room getting rid of the multi-colored wire bundles usually causing trips and falls. If wires cross a pathway; metal, plastic or wood channels that look like speed bumps only with a lower profile are also available. Be sure to get them installed properly so as to avoid trips and falls. If you have children, get cables routed through the ceiling to prevent hazards.
